Crowley Foundation Scholarship Recipient
Butterflies flew from wall to wall in my stomach, sweat slowly dripped down my face and in the palms of my hands. I had no clue why I was so anxious-it was just an interview to volunteer at the number one hospital in Colorado. Deep down I knew I could earn a spot volunteering at University of Colorado Hospital, and sure enough I did.
A CT technician, Charmaine, pointed out anatomy to me and taught me a tremendous amount about the Radiology department: the CT machine, how to treat patients, and the importance of removing metal before scans. One day closer to the end of the summer, Charmaine expressed, “You’re a hard working teenager who shows a substantial amount of interest in becoming a doctor.” This confidence boosting compliment gave me tremendous hope. It was astonishing that staff recognized potential in me. My passion for becoming a doctor has grown stronger after my learning experience as a volunteer, helping me realize that pursuing a career in the medical field is what I want to do. I want to be the reason why people feel and look better, and I want to be able to make an impact in others’ lives.
